About Burgess Adams Edinburgh Architect
Peter Burgess established the Practice in 1985 and in 1989 joined in partnership with Neil Adams to form Burgess Adams Architects in Edinburgh. In 1998 Neil Adams left the Practice to follow his own interests and Peter Burgess has remained as principal since.
In the intervening years, the Practice has earned a respected place within the fraternity of Edinburgh and Scottish Architects. Skills and experience have been developed within specific areas of Architecture and the Practice has undertaken commissions both in and around Edinburgh and throughout Scotland.
Peter Burgess practised first as a Chartered Quantity Surveyor, before moving to Architecture. He studied under Professor Sir James Dunbar-Nasmith and the late Colin McWilliam, and has pursued an interest in the Conservation and Restoration of historic and listed buildings. Following a year working on an Antiquities Project in the Hejaz Mountains of Arabia, he undertook a sabbatical in Japan, with the Bunkacho, in the study of temple, castle and domestic timber structures and their construction.
This unique combination of background professional practice and study has provided a core understanding of both Scottish Architecture and the design and detailing of construction in other cultures. Common to both is the understanding of the materials being used and the care, skill and aesthetic refinement implicit in the execution of these built structures.
Upon his return from Japan, Peter established his Practice within the Works of the Royal Warrant Cabinet Makers and Interior Decorators Whytock & Reid. During an eight-year period the Practice was commissioned and undertook the Cabinet Firm's design of new furniture and of many interior projects. This interest and experience in furniture design and construction is one of the cornerstones of the Practice, and single commissions and commissions within larger works are regularly undertaken.
An understanding of existing structures coupled with experience in interior projects and furniture, has led to many commissions to alter and extend Domestic properties, shops and offices. The preferred solutions often require a traditional approach. However, the Practice is keen to develop a contemporary design language where this is appropriate and desirable.
The Architects Practice has maintained a link and has worked in tandem with the design company, Burgess and MacLean, in the design and execution of exhibitions and museum sets and exhibits. These works have often been commissioned directly by National and City galleries and museums and on other occasions, have been undertaken in support of design works by others.
In all, the Practice seeks to apply care throughout the process of design and of the execution of the project in hand. This has served well in producing a finished result which is imaginatively designed, well crafted, and which our many Clients have come to value and enjoy.
